Let’s face it - asking for help is TOUGH! What’s even MORE difficult is asking for help when things are extremely difficult, complicated, or messy. Maybe you feel stuck or aren’t quite sure where to start. Maybe you’ve thought, “I should be able to handle this!” and have been too proud to admit there’s a real problem. Grin and bear it, right? Parenting isn’t supposed to be done in isolation. We need people around us who will celebrate with us in the good times and come alongside us in the hard times. Medical professionals, counselors, vision therapists, occupational and physical therapists, dieticians, friends and family members can help provide professional and emotional help when we are going through difficult parenting marathons. It’s essential to find individuals who have knowledge and experience with what you are dealing with. Throughout my parenting journey, I found the more honest I’m willing to be with professionals, as well as trusted friends and family, about the struggles I’m facing, the more supported I’ve felt.
“Could you please do me a favor?” “Would you mind…?” “Would it be too much trouble for you to…” “Can you give me a hand with this?” These are phrases that you may feel uncomfortable using, but that can help you on your journey. Practical support is beneficial for both the giver and the receiver. It may look like letting someone bring you a meal, asking someone to take your child to soccer practice, seeing if it’s possible for your child to have a playdate at a friend’s house, having someone watch your baby so you can take that much needed nap, or asking a friend to come and sit with you so you don’t feel so alone. Take some time in the next couple of days to evaluate where you’re at. First, make a list of people in your life who can support you professionally, emotionally or practically. Next, reach out to them and be honest about what’s going on, allowing them to help you. Supporting parents on their journey is what I LOVE to do. If you could use additional support or encouragement, please reach out!
