When’s the last time you sat down and thought about what methods you use to motivate your child? Maybe you use sticker charts or candy, or words of encouragement. Maybe you use consequences or threats. Maybe you offer privileges or give them an allowance. I’ve found that keeping my kids engaged requires me to reassess my motivators to keep things interesting. In case you’re in the same boat, I’ve got you covered!

Rewards don’t have to be big or expensive to be effective. Children thrive on recognition, autonomy, and shared experiences. When rewards are thoughtfully chosen, they reinforce positive behavior and strengthen the parent-child bond. Whether your child is working hard on a new skill, completing chores without being asked, or showing kindness to a sibling, offering meaningful rewards can keep them motivated and engaged.

Here are 7 simple and fun motivators:
  1. Extra Playtime
Let your child stay up 15 minutes later or have an extra round of their favorite game.

  2. Coupon Jar
Create a set of fun “coupons” they can redeem, like “Skip a Chore” or “Pick the Family Movie Night.” Fold them up, put them in a mason jar, and let them pick one!

  3. One-on-One Date
A special outing with just you and your child—whether it’s a park visit, bookstore trip, or cozy reading time at home—spending time with you, where they have your undivided attention, is a huge motivator!

  4. Choose the Playlist
Let them be the DJ for a family dance party or car ride—kids love taking control of the music!

  5. Special Privileges
Allow them to pick what’s for dinner, sit in a favorite chair, or be “in charge” of a fun family activity.

  6. Creative Time
Give extra time for art, LEGO building, or any hobby they love without interruptions.

  7. Experience-Based Rewards
Plan a simple adventure, like a nature walk, a picnic, or a trip to a favorite local spot.

Just a quick reminder: Praise goes a long way! A heartfelt “I’m proud of you” or a high-five can be just as rewarding as anything tangible. Try these ideas and see what works best for your family! As always, if you want to talk about situations specific to your family, I’m here to help!
