Discover the Joy of Movement: Exciting Ways to Get Your Family Active!

Fall is one of my favorite times of the year for a couple of reasons. One, the kids are back in school and it’s easier to keep a routine. Two, I love wearing warm sweaters and cozy socks. Three, the changing leaves in Wisconsin create one of the most picturesque backgrounds for me to be active and move with my family.

There are many studies that show outdoor movement and soaking in Vitamin D can be beneficial to lowering our stress, improving our sleep and immunity, boosting our self-esteem and creativity, and helping us focus. As with a lot of things in our lives, we need to be intentional with making movement a priority and setting an example for our kids. Family movement doesn’t have to be hardcore or complicated. Here are a few ideas to try to incorporate into your family’s routine.

  • Hiking is a wonderful way for families to spend quality time together while staying active. Exploring a local trail or venturing into a nearby state park offers a chance to enjoy the great outdoors and get away from everyday distractions. Walking in nature has been shown to reduce stress, boost mood, and improve overall health.

  • Have you ever tried geocaching? Try engaging in a fun activity that combines adventure, problem-solving, and physical activity. This modern-day treasure hunt involves using a GPS to find hidden "caches" placed by other geocachers in various locations. It's a great way to encourage kids (and adults!) to move more, think creatively, and appreciate nature. Plus, the thrill of finding a cache makes every outing a memorable adventure. Download an app and then go hunt for geocaches with your family - mine always loved seeing what treasures they got to bring home that other people had left behind.

  • Who doesn't love a good bounce on a trampoline? Trampoline games are not only fun but also a fantastic form of exercise. Get creative with games like trampoline tag, dodgeball, or simply challenge each other to see who can jump the highest. Ask your kids which game they would love for you to play with them, and then follow through! It's a great way to burn off energy and get those muscles moving!

  • Instead of driving to the park, why not hop on your bikes? Biking is an excellent way for families to explore their neighborhoods, parks, and bike trails. Biking together as a family can be a fun way to bond and create lasting memories. Head down to the library, farmer’s market, or even the ice cream shop for a quick treat!

With your family, brainstorm ways you would enjoy being active together, and then embrace the fun of family movement while creating a healthier, more active lifestyle together!
